Description
Hickman  is a “burned” county, in that it's earliest records were burned in March of 1866, after the war. They did not burn in the courthouse fire, but rather in The Freedman’s Bureau and Post Office building. Most of the DEEDS survived and are the best tools for early research .  Court and marriage records are only available from 1866 to the present so the content in these early deeds can reveal vital information not available anywhere else. HICKMAN COUNTY, TENNESSEE DEED BOOKS A-G  December 1807-March 1835 "Hickman County, located in middle Tennessee, was created on 3 December 1807 from a part of Dickson County and was named in honor of Edmund Hickman, a surveyor, who, in 1785, together with James Robertson and Robert Weakley, came to survey lands on Pine River. On that trip Hickman was killed by the indians near the mouth of Defeated Creek on Duck River, within a mile of the present city of Centerville, the county seat. These deeds are abstracted and start at the beginning of the county and continue down to 1835. They give the vital data found in the original records in the court house."    By  Vickie L.
