Established in 1800 and incorporated by an act of the New Jersey State Legislature in 1848, Mount Hope is a non-sectarian cemetery that serves members of all religious denominations. Although it is primarily an historic site, Mount Hope is also still an active cemetery with nearly 1,000 lots available for purchase. Mount Hope Cemetery differs from many traditional cemeteries in a number of ways, including its location, its landscaping and design, and most significantly, its many elaborate monuments. Location Unlike most cemeteries, which are usually located on a church property or on the outskirts of a town, Mount Hope is located on 7-1/2 acres of prime real estate in the middle of a quiet upscale residential neighborhood. Situated on a hill just outside Lambertville's downtown business district, Mount Hope Cemetery offers a panoramic view overlooking one of New Jersey's most picturesque and sought-after residential communities. For those who are interested in visiting Mount Hope Cemetery, the property is located just a short walking distance from downtown Lambertville, with its many restaurants, antique shops and other cultural attractions. Landscaping & Design Unlike most cemeteries, which are laid out very symmetrically on a flat parcel of land with uniform rows of headstones, Mount Hope is laid out as a park, with more than 100 mature shade trees throughout the grounds. In fact, Mount Hope actually serves as a park for local residents, many of whom take an active role in the maintenance of the property. Because the entire 7-1/2 acre property was developed simultaneously rather than in sections, there is considerably more space between the headstones than is usual in a cemetery, creating the impression of open space throughout the property. There are also several large areas throughout the cemetery that are still open and unused. The Giant Monuments of Mount Hope The most striking aspect of Mount Hope Cemetery is the number of extraordinarily large monuments and obelisks throughout the property. Twelve of these marble and granite towers measure between fifteen and twenty feet in height, making them literally "monumental" in size. This scale of memorial sculpture is not normally seen in private cemeteries, but rather in town squares and formal parks of large cities. Most of these enormously large, expensive monuments were erected in the late 1800s, during a period when Lambertville was a prosperous center for industry and commerce in the region. How and why these giant monuments came to be placed in an essentially rural setting is something of a mystery today, but it clearly indicates that the founders of the community regarded Mount Hope Cemetery as a place of very high esteem and importance. Viewed from a distance, these giant monuments give Mount Hope the appearance of a sort of "Victorian-Era Stonehenge." Property Maintenance Mount Hope Cemetery employs the services of a professional landscaper to cut the cemetery lawns during the growing season. A team of dedicated volunteers oversees the other aspects of the property maintenance including trimming and pruning of trees, seeding of lawns, and weed and leaf control, among other functions. Professional tree surgeons are employed when needed. Payment Methods Payment for the purchase of these cemetery lots can be made by Paypal, personal check or money order. Deeds will be issued upon receipt of payment. Regulatory Compliance Mount Hope Cemetery Association is in full compliance with all pertinent state and federal regulatory agencies including the New Jersey Cemetery Board, the Office of Charities Registration of the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs, the New Jersey Division of Commercial Recording and the Internal Revenue Service. Private Resales, Bulk Sales & State Regulations Private resale and bulk sales of cemetery plots in New Jersey are governed by regulations established by the New Jersey Cemetery Board. NJ State law requires that whenever cemetery plots are sold or re-sold, a payment equal to 15% of the sale price must be deposited into the cemetery's Maintenance and Preservation Trust Fund by the seller. No more than 17 lots can be sold to one buyer without special permission from the New Jersey Cemetery Board. Further information about these and other regulations governing cemeteries in New Jersey can be obtained by contacting the Cemetery Board at www.state.nj.us/lps/ca/nonmedical/cemetery.htm. In these cases, the fees for interments are charged by each individual funeral director, not by the cemetery. In these cases, the fee for the burial of each individual cremated remains is $350.00. For further information please call 609-397-5675 or send an email to info@mounthopecemetery.org.
